◎幕后揭秘
　　1989年，仅用12周便拍摄完成的《蝙蝠侠》席卷了全球院线，以3500万美元的成本狂赚4亿1100万，面对如此惊人的巨额票房，华纳兄弟公司认为拍摄续集刻不容缓。蒂姆·波顿对《蜘蛛侠》的感情颇为复杂，他在1989年接受采访时说：“如果续集能呈现出新内容和新看点，我愿意继续担纲导演，否则的话，拍摄续集恐怕是最愚蠢的想法。”在波顿决定为20世纪福克斯公司执导《剪刀手爱德华》的同时，《蝙蝠侠》的编剧萨姆·哈姆完成了续集剧本初稿，“蝙蝠侠之父”鲍勃·凯恩也被召回任创作顾问。
　　波顿非常看好《希德姊妹帮》的编剧丹尼尔·沃特斯，因为制片方给予了更广阔的发挥空间，所以不满于剧本初稿的波顿委托沃特斯重写剧本，沃特斯先后修改了五稿，其中企鹅竞选市长的情节源于60年代电视系列剧《蝙蝠侠》（Batman）。
　　本片于1991年6月开拍，剧组占用了华纳兄弟公司的16号摄影棚和环球影业的12号摄影棚，前者用于搭建哥谭市广场，后者用于搭建企鹅的地下巢穴。除了这两个好莱坞最大的摄影棚之外，华纳兄弟公司还动用了超过半数的拍摄场地打造其他哥谭市布景。为了给企鹅创造舒适的拍摄环境，波顿使用了容积高达150万加仑的水池。出于情节需要，剧组人员会将火箭捆绑在企鹅背部，动物保护组织因此横加指责，不过剧组的企鹅驯养员辩解道：“在影片拍摄过程中，制片方始终以保证企鹅的舒适和安全为前提。在空运途中，机舱内温度会降至7度，在好莱坞，制片方提供了冷藏车、游泳池和每天1吨半的冰块，它们食用的鲜鱼都是直接从码头购得，当时的户外温度足有37度，而片场的温度一直保持在2度以下。”企鹅们显然对养尊处优的拍摄经历非常满意，因为它们当中的大多数都开始成双入对和受孕产卵。
　　华纳兄弟公司采取了极为严格的保密措施，他们要求美工部门必须拉上办公室窗帘，所有演职人员均需佩戴印有照片的身份卡才能进入片场，甚至连前来探班的凯文·科斯特纳都被拒之门外。在此期间，某娱乐杂志曾刊登了一张丹尼·德维托的上妆照，为追查到泄密者，制片方特地聘请了一位私家侦探。
